Living room lighting: layered light and floor lamp placement

Good living room lighting does not rely on a single ceiling light but on three layers: general light that fills the room, task light for activities such as reading, and accent light that creates the atmosphere. The floor lamp is the most flexible piece because it can take on two of these layers at once; beside a reading chair it becomes task light, and in an empty corner it becomes ambient light that adds depth to the room. In this article we explain layered lighting, where to put a floor lamp in the living room, how to choose its height and scale, and how to combine table lamps, wall sconces and floor lamps within the same stone family.

What is layered lighting?

Layered lighting means dividing the light in a space among several sources at different heights and with different jobs. In a living room, this means several warm points of light spread below and above eye level instead of a single strong light from the ceiling.

  • General light: A chandelier, recessed spotlights or indirect ceiling light. It is needed for cleaning, for large groups of guests and to supplement daylight; used alone in the evening, it makes the living room look flat and shadowless.
  • Task light: A floor lamp beside the reading chair or a table lamp in the work corner. The light falls on a specific surface, a page or the hands.
  • Accent light: Light that brings a wall, a painting, a shelf or an object to the fore. An onyx lamp lit from within becomes both the light source and the accented object itself.

When you can control each layer from its own switch, the living room turns into several different rooms in the same day: a bright seating area in the afternoon, a dim corner for conversation in the evening, just a few warm points for a film at night.

How many light sources should a living room have?

In an average living room, at least three separate sources are recommended besides the ceiling light; spreading them to different points of the room so that they form a triangle balances the light. This approach, often used in interior architecture, is called the “light triangle”.

Placing the corners of the triangle at different heights strengthens the effect: a low table lamp on a side table, a pair of wall sconces at eye level, a floor lamp rising in the corner. The eye notices the light moving between low and high points, and the living room looks deeper. In large or L-shaped living rooms, each seating group can have its own triangle.

Where should a floor lamp go in a living room?

There are three classic places for a floor lamp: beside a reading chair, in empty corners and at one end of the sofa. Which one you choose depends on whether the floor lamp will provide task light or ambient light.

Beside a reading chair

A reading floor lamp is placed beside the chair, slightly behind the shoulder of the person sitting; the light comes down over the shoulder onto the page, and the shadow of the head does not fall on the book. In this corner, a head that spreads light downward or softly around it is more functional than a body that only glows through the stone.

Empty corners

The dark corner of a living room is one of the most effective places for a floor lamp. Light in the corner illuminates two walls at once, makes the boundaries of the room visible and makes the living room feel more spacious. Here accent matters more than task; a floor lamp that is lit from within and stands like a sculpture even when unlit makes use of this corner at every hour of the day.

Beside the sofa

A floor lamp placed at one end of the sofa, behind or beside the side table, frames the seating group. Make sure it does not block the walkway and that its cable does not cross the walking area; if possible, position the floor lamp near an outlet. For a sofa that stands in the middle of the living room, a floor outlet is a clean way to make the cable invisible.

Whichever position you choose, do not place an onyx floor lamp in front of a window that gets direct sun all day; keeping it away from direct sunlight is recommended to protect the stone’s natural texture. If there is a television, placing the floor lamp beside the screen rather than opposite it prevents reflections on the screen.

PositionRole of the floor lampWhat to watch for
Beside a reading chairTask lightThe light source should be slightly behind the shoulder of the person sitting and above eye level
Empty cornerAccent and ambient lightDo not push the floor lamp right into the corner, so that the light can spread onto both walls
End of the sofaAmbient light, reading when neededKeep the walkway and the cable route clear
Edge of the dining areaAmbient lightIt should have the same color temperature as the light above the table
Beside the TV unitBackground lightDo not place it opposite the screen; it causes reflections

How do you choose floor lamp height and size?

The height of a floor lamp is chosen according to seat height: for reading, the light source should sit slightly above the eye level of the person sitting in the chair. That way the bulb is not visible and the light comes downward; floor lamps 145–160 cm tall easily achieve this relationship with most chairs.

For scale, look at the diameter of the head and the footprint of the base. A slim column and a narrow base fit into tight gaps between a chair and a wall. A floor lamp with a wide dome or bowl, on the other hand, needs room to breathe around it and is a candidate to be a focal point on its own; squeezing it into a small corner stifles both its light and its sculptural effect.

Weight also affects placement. A floor lamp made of natural stone is much heavier than a lamp with a metal body; some of Nyxora’s stone-bodied floor lamps weigh about 18 kg. This weight makes the floor lamp stable but not suited to being moved often; plan its position from the start and place it on a flat, solid floor.

How do table lamps, wall sconces and floor lamps work together in one living room?

There are two ways to make different types of lamps work together: staying within the same stone or tone family, or choosing pieces from the same form family. In both cases, all sources should have the same color temperature, preferably 2700 K warm white.

The same stone family creates a calm continuity in the living room. A floor lamp column banded in honey, amber and cream, together with a wall sconce and a table lamp in the same warm tones, tells the same color story at different heights. You can compare the color and light character of five onyx types on our material page.

The same form family, by contrast, gives a more graphic unity. In the Nyxora collection, some forms are made in more than one type: Ombrelle’s umbrella form as a table lamp, wall sconce and floor lamp; Golden Aura’s mushroom silhouette as a table lamp and floor lamp; and Maison’s beaded dome as a wall sconce and as the Maison d’Onyx 01 Floor Lamp. Using one of these families at two or three different heights in the living room brings layered light together in a single design language.

One caution: when every piece is sculptural, none of them stands out. Choose one main piece for the living room, most often the floor lamp, and keep the other sources at a scale that accompanies it. When planning wall sconces, you can use our guide to wall sconce mounting height.

What color temperature is best for a living room?

For living room lights used in the evening, 2700 K warm white is recommended. This tone shows the honey, amber and copper colors of onyx as they are; cool white light, by contrast, washes out the color of the stone and pulls it toward gray.

If your chandelier or spotlights have a cooler tone, you will need to switch them off in the evening and live with the floor lamp and table lamps, or bring the general light down to 2700 K as well. Different color temperatures in the same living room make the same stone look warm in one corner and pale in another. We cover the topic in detail in our article 2700 K or 3000 K?

At the Nyxora studio, we think of the floor lamp in the living room not as a piece of furniture but as the vertical axis of the room: a sculpture of stone by day, a column that carries the living room’s light in the evening.

Which Nyxora floor lamps suit a living room?

Nyxora is a studio that makes handmade lighting from natural onyx in its atelier in Izmir; each design is produced in limited numbers and its vein pattern never repeats. The dimensions of the floor lamps that stand out for the living room are as follows:

When choosing, consider the job the floor lamp will do: for a reading chair, the slim-bodied Maison 01, which the studio positions as a reading lamp; for an empty corner or a narrow gap, the slim-columned Colonne, lit from within; in a living room with a fireplace or bookshelves, the dimmable Golden Aura; and for a piece that will be the focal point on its own in a large living room, Fleur.

You can browse all models with their dimensions in the floor lamp collection. If you send a few photos of your living room and a short description to our free consultation service, the studio prepares two or three suggestions within 1–2 business days; there is no obligation to buy.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a floor lamp go in a living room?

There are three classic places for a floor lamp: beside a reading chair, in empty dark corners and at one end of the sofa. For reading, the light source should be slightly behind the shoulder of the person sitting. In a corner, the floor lamp lights two walls at once and makes the living room feel more spacious. In every case, keep the walkway and the cable route clear and avoid spots that get direct sun.

How many lamps should a living room have?

In an average living room, at least three light sources are recommended besides the ceiling light. Spread them to different points of the room and at different heights so that they form a triangle; for example, a table lamp, a pair of wall sconces and a floor lamp. In large or L-shaped living rooms, setting up a separate light triangle for each seating group keeps the balance.

How tall should a floor lamp be for reading?

In a reading floor lamp, the light source should sit slightly above the eye level of the person sitting in the chair; that way the bulb is not visible and the light comes over the shoulder onto the page. Floor lamps 145–160 cm tall easily achieve this relationship with most chairs. Place the floor lamp beside the chair, slightly behind the shoulder of the person sitting.

Can you use a floor lamp and a chandelier in the same living room?

Yes, that is the basis of layered lighting. The chandelier or ceiling light provides general lighting; the floor lamp, table lamps and wall sconces take on task and accent light. Control each layer from its own switch and choose all sources with the same color temperature, preferably 2700 K warm white. Switching off the chandelier in the evening and lighting only the low sources gives the living room a warm atmosphere.

How do I make different lamps work together in the same living room?

There are two ways: stay within the same stone and tone family, or choose pieces from the same form family. At Nyxora, for example, the Ombrelle form is made as a table lamp, a wall sconce and a floor lamp. Whichever route you take, light all sources at the same color temperature, choose one main piece for the living room and keep the others at a scale that accompanies it.
